Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti has called on residents to abandon charcoal burning and other activities that contribute to deforestation, as she marked World Environment Day with a tree-planting exercise at Kwa Mboo Primary School in Kinanie, Athi River Sub-County. Flanked by County Water, Environment, and Climate Change Executive Catherine Mutanu and Athi River DCC Patrick Mwangi, Governor Ndeti warned that environmental offenders will face strict legal consequences.
During the event, the governor emphasized her administration’s commitment to supporting policies and programs that promote clean energy and sustainable environmental management. She urged schools and institutions of learning across the county to actively participate in tree-growing initiatives, highlighting the need for a collective response to environmental challenges. Ndeti noted that recent erratic weather patterns, including flooding, underscored the urgent need for environmental stewardship and climate-conscious practices.
The initiative is part of Machakos County’s broader efforts to promote sustainable development and mitigate the impacts of climate change. By integrating environmental education and enforcement measures, the county aims to create a culture of responsibility among residents while preserving natural resources for future generations. The administration plans to continue partnering with national agencies and local communities to safeguard the environment and promote a cleaner, greener Machakos.
