The Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) has received Sh1.6 billion from the German Development Bank (KfW) and the European Union (EU) to improve sanitation in Manyatta informal settlement, Kisumu City.

Under the Integrated Water Resources Management Programme (IWRMP), the initiative will construct 550 modern toilet blocks in Manyatta A and extend the sewerage system by 15 kilometers, reducing untreated waste discharged into Lake Victoria.

Programme Coordinator Arsene Aime Mukubwa said Sh800 million has already been released, with the remaining Sh800 million expected next year. The project is part of a broader regional effort to enhance water quality across East Africa.

Kisumu County Director of Public Health Fredrick Oluoch praised the initiative, noting it aligns with the county’s target to raise sanitation access to 70% by 2027, up from 33.1% in 2022.
