Laikipia County and KURA Ink Deal to Fast-Track Road Network Upgrade
In a move set to revolutionize connectivity and spur economic growth, the Laikipia County Government has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA). The agreement, signed in Nanyuki, establishes a formal framework for collaboration on the development, upgrading, and maintenance of key urban road infrastructure across the county’s major towns. The partnership specifically targets roads in Nanyuki, Nyahururu, and Rumuruti, aiming to decongest town centers and improve links to agricultural zones and tourist destinations.

The MoU outlines a shared responsibility model where the county government will handle land acquisition and wayleaves, while KURA will provide technical expertise, project design, and oversee the actual construction. Governor Joshua Irungu highlighted that this partnership resolves long-standing jurisdictional challenges that have previously stalled projects. For years, we have faced delays because of the blurred lines between county and national government roads. This MoU clears the path for us to work as one unit, delivering tarmac roads, modern drainage, and pedestrian walkways for our people, Governor Irungu stated during the signing ceremony.

Residents and business owners in Nanyuki have welcomed the news with anticipation. The town, a crucial hub for tourism and military operations, has struggled with traffic congestion and deteriorating road conditions. John Mwangi, a logistics company owner, expressed his relief, saying, Good roads mean less vehicle maintenance costs and faster delivery times for my clients. This is a direct boost to our bottom line. The Laikipia Farmers Association also lauded the initiative, noting that improved feeder roads will significantly reduce post-harvest losses by ensuring faster transportation of perishable goods to markets.

The long-term outlook of this collaboration is seen as a model for inter-governmental cooperation. KURA Director-General Eng. Silas Kinoti confirmed that the first project under this MoU, the tarmacking of a 5-kilometer stretch in Nanyuki’s industrial area, is already in the design phase and tendering will begin next quarter. This is not just about Laikipia; we are demonstrating how different levels of government can synergize to accelerate the achievement of infrastructure goals outlined in Vision 2030, Eng. Kinoti added. The success of this partnership is expected to attract further investment to the region by enhancing its overall infrastructure profile.
