Nairobi County Plants Over 60,000 Trees to Restore Hope and Combat Climate Change
Nairobi, Kenya — Nairobi County marked National Tree Planting Day on May 10, 2024, by planting 60,451 trees across all 17 sub-counties in memory of lives lost and property destroyed during recent floods. The initiative, led by the County’s Director of Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Mr. John P. Malawi, was held at the Railway Training Institute in South C. Mr. Malawi emphasized that the exercise was not only an act of remembrance but also a renewed commitment to environmental sustainability and the national target of planting 15 billion trees.
Mr. Malawi noted that the County is taking a leading role in advancing environmental conservation through partnerships, community participation, and innovative programs. As we gather here today, we not only plant trees but also sow the seeds of a greener and healthier future for Nairobi, he said. He urged residents to take personal responsibility in nurturing and protecting the environment, adding that the tree planting symbolizes Nairobi’s unwavering dedication to combating climate change. Across the sub-counties, environment officers mobilized communities to take part in the exercise, underscoring the importance of shared efforts in building a sustainable and resilient city.
County Chief Officer for Social Services, Mr. George Mutiso, who also joined the exercise, lauded Nairobi residents for turning up in large numbers to support the initiative. Other speakers echoed the call for collective action, highlighting the critical role of trees in mitigating the effects of climate change and improving urban living conditions. As Nairobi continues to recover from the impact of flooding, the tree planting drive symbolizes hope, resilience, and the County’s determination to create a greener legacy for future generations. The County pledged to sustain such efforts through regular community-led activities to ensure that every seed planted today grows into a lasting symbol of environmental renewal.
