Intensifying The Fight Against Illicit Alcohol (county-level crackdown)

Kirinyaga, Kenya – The County Government of Kirinyaga has intensified its efforts to curb illicit alcohol after two residents reportedly fell ill from consuming locally brewed drinks in Marura, Kangai Ward, Mwea. The two men were initially treated at Njegas Health Centre before being referred to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital for further examination. County officials have confirmed that the patients are in stable condition, dismissing earlier rumors that they had gone blind.

County Executive Committee Member for Sports, Culture, and Social Services, Dennis Musyimi, who oversees alcohol regulation, said the government has launched investigations to identify the source of the brew and hold culprits accountable. The Mwea West Sub-county Security Team, in collaboration with county officials, is tracking where the alcohol is being brewed and sold. Updates will be provided as action is taken, Musyimi said. The move comes alongside intensified enforcement of the Kirinyaga County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act 2024, which mandates proper licensing, public health compliance, and regulated outlet locations.

Musyimi warned bar owners against operating without valid licenses, noting that enforcement teams are conducting regular inspections and impromptu visits to ensure compliance. Weekly review meetings are held to monitor alcohol-related matters, including sample collection and testing for quality and safety. Governor Anne Waiguru emphasized that the Act was designed to protect public health and established a multi-agency sub-county committee to monitor compliance. Maina Kihia, Chairman of the County Liquor Board, further stated that any outlets found selling illicit alcohol risk having their licenses revoked, reinforcing the county’s commitment to safeguarding residents from the dangers of substandard brews.
