Multi‑agency reforestation initiative in Marsabit

by KenyaPolls

Marsabit County witnessed a significant environmental conservation effort on April 8, 2025, as Kenya Defence Forces personnel joined members of several security agencies in a large-scale tree planting exercise. The initiative, led by Lt. Col. D.M. Waigwa, Commanding Officer of 23 MIB, and Marsabit County Conservator Mr. Lengiro, brought together officers from the National Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, and representatives from the Data Protection Unit in Nairobi. Together, the multi-agency team successfully planted 1,100 trees, highlighting a unified commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action.

The exercise served not only to enhance forest cover but also provided a platform for professional collaboration among the participating agencies. By combining efforts, the teams demonstrated the benefits of coordinated action in addressing shared challenges, such as climate change and environmental degradation, while reinforcing the stable security environment in the region. Participants emphasized that such joint initiatives strengthen inter-agency relationships and offer opportunities for knowledge-sharing and collective problem-solving.

Local leaders and organizers hailed the exercise as a critical step toward sustainable development and climate adaptation in arid and semi-arid regions like Marsabit. The initiative is expected to inspire further tree planting and conservation activities across the county and beyond. Authorities stressed the importance of continued public participation in reforestation efforts, highlighting the broader role of such programs in combating soil erosion, reducing carbon emissions, and building resilience against the impacts of climate change.
