Kenyan Elite Forces Foil Al-Shabaab Terror Plot in Garissa

Garissa, Kenya – May 8, 2025: Kenya’s elite Special Operations Group (SOG) successfully foiled a terror plot in Garissa, killing a suspected Al-Shabaab militant while recovering a cache of weapons and explosives. The operation was launched after locals reported armed militants attempting to plant Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the Dadaab-Hagadera road, a key route used by civilians and security vehicles.

During the early morning operation, the security team tracked four suspects, resulting in one militant killed and three others injured. Authorities recovered a PKM machine gun, AK-47 rifle, pistol, communication radio, and an IED remote control from the scene. Counter Terrorism Police Kenya confirmed that the team is pursuing the remaining suspects. The success of the operation was aided by timely intelligence provided by local residents.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen praised the security personnel for their vigilance, noting that numerous potential threats across the country are detected and neutralized daily. For the North Eastern region, the threat comes mainly from Al-Shabaab. We have put in place measures to protect citizens and prevent attacks, said CS Murkomen. He also urged travelers in high-risk areas to adhere strictly to security protocols to avoid fatalities and injuries. The operation marks another success in ongoing efforts to secure Kenya’s northeastern region against cross-border militant attacks.
