How Homa Bay unlocked its economic potential in three years

by KenyaPolls

Homa Bay County is experiencing a transformative period of development, driven by Governor Gladys Wanga’s strategic initiatives aimed at unlocking the region’s economic and social potential. Central to this progress is the modernisation of Koginga Beach Fish Market, a partnership between the national and county governments. The new facility, equipped with cold storage, processing plants, and hygienic spaces for fishmongers, is set to streamline the fishing industry, reduce post-harvest losses, and eliminate exploitative practices by middlemen. Residents have welcomed the development, citing improved livelihoods and a reliable marketplace for their fish products.

The county’s growth extends beyond fisheries, with significant investments in education, infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare. The Fins to Swim Scholarship programme has supported nearly 500 students financially, ensuring bright but underprivileged pupils can access quality education. Over 160 new classrooms have been constructed, with plans for an additional 240, improving early childhood learning facilities across Homa Bay. Infrastructure projects under the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Programme (KISIP II) have upgraded roads, street lighting, and water systems, while the County Aggregated Industrial Park is supporting local entrepreneurs to add value to agricultural and fish products. Agriculture-focused initiatives, including cotton, sunflower, and fish farming programmes, have already enrolled over 37,000 farmers, with private sector partnerships helping to expand processing capabilities.

Healthcare and community services have also seen remarkable enhancements. The Rachuonyo East Sub-County Hospital and the upgraded county referral hospital now offer advanced services such as dialysis, CT and MRI scans, and improved maternal care. Over 66 boreholes drilled in collaboration with the African Development Bank are improving access to clean water, while the revamped Raila Odinga Homa Bay Stadium fosters sports development and community engagement. Governor Wanga’s administration has emphasised public participation in governance and plans future projects including lakefront revitalisation and a Governor’s Park to boost tourism and recreation. The comprehensive development strategy not only addresses immediate community needs but also lays a sustainable foundation for Homa Bay’s long-term economic and social growth.
