Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) has been officially upgraded to Level 5 status after a thorough evaluation by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC). The assessment validated the hospital’s capability to provide advanced, specialized, and referral healthcare services.
This advancement represents a crucial development in enhancing healthcare provision in Vihiga County and across the broader Western Kenya region. Now classified as a Level 5 institution, VTRH will operate as a primary referral center, delivering extensive curative, preventive, and rehabilitative care while also serving as an educational and training facility for medical professionals.
During the announcement ceremony, hospital CEO Titus Mumia described the elevation as a landmark accomplishment for Vihiga County.
“It demonstrates our dedication to improving healthcare quality and enabling local access to specialized medical services,” stated Mumia.
“We are pleased with VTRH’s progress. This KMPDC endorsement recognizes the hospital’s ability to provide sophisticated medical care, educate upcoming healthcare workers, and act as a dependable referral resource for the area,” expressed Dr. Collins Masika, Medical Superintendent of VTRH.
The upgrade of VTRH to Level 5 status is anticipated to minimize patient transfers to distant medical centers and enhance availability of specialized and intensive care services.
