Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to arrive in Kenya in the coming days as part of an extensive two-week diplomatic tour of France, Kenya, and Rwanda. This visit occurs amid recent online exchanges between him and President William Ruto that have captured continental attention and sparked intense debate across social media platforms.

According to a statement from Nigeria’s Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu will depart Abuja today, initially traveling to France before proceeding to Nairobi, Kenya. He will attend the Africa-France Summit set to commence on May 11.

In Nairobi, the summit will be jointly chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and President William Ruto, bringing together African leaders and French officials to address key continental priorities.

The summit will also examine other significant issues, including energy transition, green industrialization, digital transformation, and reforms in global financing systems.

Themed “Africa Forward: Africa-France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth,” the summit will additionally focus on climate action, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, technological advancement, and peace-building efforts across Africa.

President Tinubu is anticipated to utilize the Nairobi forum to advance Nigeria’s economic reform agenda, showcase investment opportunities, and conduct bilateral meetings with global and African business leaders during the summit, as reported by a Nigerian publication, This Day.

Following his engagements in Kenya on May 12, Tinubu will travel to Kigali, Rwanda, to attend the Africa CEO Forum scheduled for May 14-15. At the forum, more than 2,000 business leaders and policymakers will discuss strategies to accelerate intra-African trade and industrial growth.

The visit takes place against the backdrop of recent public exchanges between the two leaders that have generated widespread online reactions.

This was particularly notable after Tinubu previously remarked that Nigerians were “better off than Kenyans” amid fuel price pressures.

The situation intensified when President Ruto faced criticism for stating during a diaspora event in Italy that Nigerian-accented English could be challenging to comprehend, comments that drew widespread condemnation across Nigeria and beyond.

The online responses triggered a surge of cyber exchanges between Kenyan and Nigerian users, with debates focusing on economic conditions, language, and national pride, further heightening the digital rivalry between the two nations.

However, President Ruto later attempted to minimize the controversy, explaining that his remarks had been misinterpreted and were meant as light comparisons about English proficiency throughout Africa.

He adopted a more conciliatory approach, emphasizing Kenya’s strong ties with Nigeria and mentioning personal family connections, while extending greetings to President Tinubu to ease tensions.
