Social Media Leads as Main News Source for Kenyans

by KenyaPolls

For many years, Kenyans began their days with radio news and ended their evenings with television news reports. That habit is now changing rapidly.

New statistics on media consumption show that 27% of Kenyans now receive their news through social media platforms, surpassing television (25%), radio (19%), and newspapers (13%). This marks the first time that digital platforms have taken the lead.

Platforms like X, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram are fast, free, and directly accessible on mobile phones. When events happen, many Kenyans learn about them through social media before traditional news outlets have even reported. The speed has been the primary factor in this trend shift.

Kenya is also among the countries with the highest social media usage worldwide, where users spend more than 5 hours daily on these platforms. For young people especially, the idea of waiting for scheduled news programs seems outdated. Instead, news, opinions, and entertainment all come together on social platforms.

However, these changes come with their own challenges. Fake news spreads very quickly on social media, often before being verified. A message can reach millions of people within minutes, whether accurate or not. This puts readers in a position to be more discerning about what they see and share.

Traditional media outlets have also faced pressure. They now face the question of how to remain relevant and demonstrate the value of accuracy and professional analysis in a rapidly evolving digital world.
