President William Ruto revealed multiple development initiatives in Kisii and Nyamira counties, with the highlight being the commencement of the KSh1 billion expansion and enhancement of Gusii Stadium.
During his visit to Kisii, the President stated that the government had already set aside KSh20 million for initial project preparations, including relocating residents to accommodate construction activities.
“We are reconstructing and expanding Gusii Stadium, providing it with a contemporary design that will bring the facility to international standards,” Ruto explained.
“Our objective is to create an environment where our athletes can flourish and sustainably earn from their abilities.”
The upgraded facility will accommodate 14,000 spectators, feature a FIFA-standard pitch, and include an eight-lane track, with completion anticipated by April 2027.
Ruto expressed gratitude to Kisii Governor Paul Simba Arati for managing the relocation process, which involved engaging key stakeholders like AFC, who consented to relocate to an alternative location.
“This has enabled the construction of a modern international stadium in Kisii,” he emphasized.
Governor Arati welcomed the project, noting that the increased funding had increased the stadium’s capacity from the initial 10,000 to 14,000 seats.
He also acknowledged the national government’s support for additional infrastructure projects in the region.
“The expansion of Gusii Stadium represents a significant achievement for our residents,” stated Arati, mentioning that ongoing projects in Nyanchwa, Daraja Mbili market, and Nyambera were already improving living conditions.
Beyond sports facilities, the President announced plans to construct eight new roads across Kisii and Nyamira, upgrade the Suneka airstripwhere a contractor has already been selectedand establish a university in Nyamira County.
He also outlined investments in markets, affordable housing, and last-mile electricity connectivity aimed at promoting economic growth.
