President William Ruto has unveiled plans to introduce a new ferry at the Likoni crossing in Mombasa before December concludes. During his five-day development tour along the coast, President Ruto disclosed that the ferry construction project will cost approximately Ksh. 3 billion. “I have witnessed this morning how Mombasa residents cross the ferry here,” he stated, “We are constructing another ferry before December. We have allocated Ksh 3 billion. By December, we will have a new ferry in operation.” The president explained that the decision to build a new ferry is aimed at reducing congestion frequently experienced when citizens travel between the two sides. Furthermore, President Ruto mentioned that the government plans to invest an additional Ksh. 500 million in Mtongwe to enhance mobility in the area. “And in Mtongwe as well, we are investing another KSh. 500 million to ensure improved mobility throughout Mombasa County.” The Likoni ferry service transports between 15,000 to 30,000 commuters daily, while approximately 300,000 pedestrians utilize the ferry each day. President Ruto also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing issues involving squatters, missing land titles, and absentee landlords. He issued the Ministry of Lands with a 90-day deadline to resolve the absentee landlord problem. “I am directing the Ministry of Lands. They should now proceed and survey all these farms, ensuring every person verifies their land within ninety days.”
