Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially discontinued the “Linda Ground” slogan that characterized nationwide political rallies.
This marks a notable political maneuver as the party aims to bolster its support base in preparation for the 2027 General Election.
The declaration was issued during a convening of ODM aspirants from Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori counties, where party representatives presented a new mobilization strategy centered on enhancing the ODM identity, reinstating internal discipline and readying the party for the upcoming electoral battle.
The decision effectively terminates the nationwide rallies conducted under the Linda Ground banner, which had emerged following internal succession adjustments after the passing of former ODM leader Raila Odinga.
The initiative is broadly interpreted as an effort by the Oburu Oginga-led contingent to differentiate itself from the “Linda Mwananchi” group linked to Edwin Sifuna and figures perceived to be promoting divergent political narratives within the party.
While no leader explicitly named Sifuna during the gathering, repeated admonitions against fragmented movements and inconsistent messaging underscored mounting frictions within ODM during the party’s transitional phase.
ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga stated that future campaigns would exclusively utilize ODM branding and official party colors to prevent public confusion.
“We established a movement called Linda Ground to solidify our support bases, but certain individuals came and instead of developing their own movement, they infiltrated this Linda initiative and created disarray,” explained Wanga.
She advised aspirants against creating campaign materials that might imply the presence of factions within the party.
“When designing your posters and promotional content, maintain the ODM identity. The color is orange. We must avoid confusion,” she added.
Wanga maintained that ODM remains unified under Oburu’s leadership and refuted assertions of internal divisions.
“There are no factions. The party is ODM under Dr. Oburu Oginga as our leader. Any other claim is divisive,” she said.
She acknowledged that the transition following Raila Odinga’s departure had been challenging but commended Oburu for bringing stability to the party.
“Transitions are inherently difficult, especially after losing a leader of Raila Odinga’s stature,” Wanga remarked.
The meeting also disclosed ODM’s comprehensive strategy for 2027, encompassing plans to implement zoning arrangements in its traditional strongholds under the cooperation framework with United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Oburu Oginga stated that ODM’s preeminence in Nyanza would be safeguarded through negotiated coalition arrangements designed to prevent vote splitting between coalition partners.
“This region is designated for ODM. ODM holds significant strength here, and UDA will not present candidates in these territories,” he said.
Oburu defended zoning as a standard coalition tactic and encouraged party supporters to enhance grassroots mobilization to fortify ODM’s negotiating position in future government deliberations.
“When negotiations occur, parties will inquire about the number of MPs you secured, the number of MCAs you delivered and the volume of presidential votes you obtained. That determines your share in government,” he explained.
He also guaranteed aspirants that ODM nominations would be transparent and impartial, warning against corruption, intimidation and attempts to manipulate party officials through monetary means.
“We will ensure nominations are free and fair. Politics is fundamentally about public service,” he stated.
