Nyeri Polytechnic Shuts After Student Protests

by KenyaPolls

Nyeri National Polytechnic has been shut indefinitely following violent student protests that began on Friday, May 22.

Students were instructed to leave the campus immediately after the closure was announced as tensions escalated.

The protests started after a controversial student leader election, leading the administration to direct all students to vacate the premises right away.

Demonstrators gathered both inside and around the campus, creating chaos that forced the school authorities to take action.

Footage captured showed large numbers of students demonstrating at the school entrance while shouting, disrupting normal campus activities.

Police later confronted the agitated students in clashes, deploying teargas to disperse them and restore calm.

Although no official statement has been released by the institution, insider sources confirm the indefinite closure was implemented to prevent further property damage and protect public safety.

The closure of Nyeri National Polytechnic follows recent disturbances at various educational facilities across the nation, encompassing secondary schools and higher education establishments such as TVETs and universities.

On Thursday, May 21, another institution was indefinitely closed after students engaged in destructive behavior during the night of Wednesday, May 20.

Initial reports indicate that students damaged campus property before many departed in the early hours, contributing to a concerning pattern of strikes in secondary schools, especially during the second term.

Similarly, on May 12, learners at Kaumoni Boys High School in Makueni County reportedly set administrative buildings on fire.

In April, another school was indefinitely closed following a dormitory fire that caused property damage, while in January, Matungulu Boys Secondary School experienced a blaze that destroyed four dormitories.

Additional affected institutions include Dr Agrey School in Taita Taveta, Njoro Girls Senior School, Kangaru Boys Secondary in Embu County, and Chebwagan Boys High School in Kericho County.
