Kenya has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with international partners to enhance global health security, as it continues dialogues with the United States government and other global entities regarding Ebola Virus Disease readiness and response measures.
In a formal statement released by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Wednesday, the government confirmed it is participating in discussions focused on improving coordinated response mechanisms for Ebola Virus Disease and other emerging public health threats.
The declaration highlights Kenya’s willingness to engage in partnerships. It states, “Kenya embraces collaborations that reinforce global health security and reaffirm our collective dedication to safeguarding lives through unified, evidence-based initiatives.”
Earlier reporting by New York Times suggested that the Trump administration might be considering relocating US citizens exposed to the Ebola virus to Kenya for observation and care; however, the Ministry of Health statement did not specifically address the proposed isolation facility.
Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’oei told Reuters he lacked complete information about the situation and was unaware of any requests for further assistance.
Kenya noted that its contribution to regional and global health security has evolved through continuous investments in public health infrastructure, monitoring systems, professional training, and emergency readiness protocols.
The Ministry highlights that Kenyan healthcare professionals have previously contributed to outbreak responses throughout the region, including the West Africa Ebola epidemic between 2014 and 2016.
According to the statement, “Kenya’s involvement in regional and global health security has been constructed over numerous years through deliberate investments in health system enhancement, public health monitoring, workforce advancement and emergency preparedness.”
The government further emphasizes ongoing enhancement of disease monitoring and response capabilities. It states, “The nation continues to maintain and reinforce readiness measures in response to the current EVD outbreak in neighboring areas.”
Kenya has implemented its national Incident Management System as part of its preparedness strategy. Surveillance at Entry Points has been heightened, laboratories designated for testing, and coordination mechanisms reinforced at both national and county levels.
The Ministry reports continuing screening activities at entry points. It indicates, “To date, more than 55,000 travelers have been examined for the disease through various entry ports, and we have conducted tests on ten cases, all of which returned negative results.”
Regarding international cooperation, the government asserts that all arrangements will adhere to national legal and safety frameworks.
The statement notes, “Any agreements concerning international health cooperation will be governed by Kenya’s national legislation, public health standards, biosafety and biosecurity protocols, and the fundamental duty of the government to protect the health and wellbeing of the Kenyan population.”
It adds that public safety remains the primary concern, stating, “Protection of Kenyan citizens, healthcare workers and communities remains paramount.”
Kenya also emphasizes its enduring collaboration with the United States and other global partners in strengthening health systems. These partnerships, it indicates, have supported monitoring systems, workforce development, emergency preparedness and healthcare infrastructure.
The statement further reads, “Kenya appreciates its enduring relationship with the United States and other global partners in advancing health systems and health security capabilities.”
It adds that “Kenya remains dedicated to fulfilling its role as a responsible regional and global contributor in advancing health security.”
As discussions progress, the government indicates its approach will continue to be informed by scientific evidence, cooperation and national interests. It concludes with a confident expression of readiness.
“As we continue to enhance preparedness and resilience, our approach will remain guided by science, collaboration, national interest and the shared goal of shielding populations from emerging public health threats.”
The statement concludes with a resolute message of confidence: “Kenya is prepared. Kenya is capable. Kenya will continue to act responsibly in protecting both national and global health security.”
The ministry also confirmed that updates will be provided as developments occur, noting: “We will continue to provide regular updates in a timely manner.”
