Kenya’s shift to green transportation is progressing rapidly,
marked by substantial growth in vehicle registrations in recent years.
Data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA)
indicates a significant growth pattern in Kenya’s electric vehicle
sector from 2019 to mid-2025. A formerly specialized market has quickly
become a standard feature in the automotive industry.
At the start of this period in 2019, Kenya had very few electric vehicles,
with just 194 registered vehicles across the country. The expansion was
initially slow, increasing marginally to 300 units in 2020, then rising
to 584 units by 2021.
The industry reached an important threshold in 2022, surpassing 1,000
vehicles to record 1,059 registered units.
The substantial acceleration happened between 2022 and 2023, as
registrations jumped more than threefold in one year, reaching 3,753 units.
This growth trend continues without interruption. By 2024, the total count
of registered electric vehicles increased to 5,294 units.
Current statistics through June 2025 show that Kenya now has a cumulative
total of 6,442 registered electric vehicles.
