Political tension is set to escalate in the coming months as competition for the Kiambu county governor’s position, currently occupied by Dr. Kimani Wamatangi, grows more intense. The already high stakes are evident on the ground, with supporters from various political factions freely exchanging confrontational remarks.
Several politicians have expressed interest in challenging Wamatangi, including Thika Town MP Alice Wambui Ng’ang’a and Finsco Africa CEO John Mwaura Kogi, who has declared his candidacy under the Democratic Congress Party (DCP).
In a surprising development, former Kiambu Town MCA and ex-Majority Leader Anthony Ikonya disrupted the political landscape by asserting that the DCP contender, Mr. Kogi, originates from Murang’a County. Ikonya further claimed that Kogi had direct involvement in orchestrating the groups that stormed Governor Wamatangi’s office during recent demonstrations over fuel prices.
During an appearance on Kameme FM’s prominent Wednesday political program, Mbaratha, Ikonya made the explosive assertion that Kogi is actually a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) agent deliberately placed to undermine DCP’s efforts in Kiambu County.
He maintained that the unruly youths were essentially hired to create chaos and harass Wamatangi’s administration. Ikonya questioned their true intentions, suggesting that if the protesters were genuinely concerned about the fuel crisis, they would have concentrated solely on that issue instead of incorporating political distractions while Kenyan citizens continue to face economic hardship.
Mr. Ikonya’s claims underscore how fiercely contested the upcoming election promises to be, indicating a direct, all-out competition for the county’s leadership position.
Despite repeated attempts by the Kiambu Observer to obtain Mr. Kogi’s response to these serious allegations, communications remained unanswered.
Nevertheless, political observers predict a closely fought contest for the Kiambu governorship, with no clear winner anticipated as each campaign works to gain advantage.
