Health Ministry Establishes Four Ebola Testing Labs Amid Regional Outbreak Concerns

Kenya has enhanced Ebola preparedness efforts with the Ministry of Health establishing four laboratories to test potential cases while surveillance has been increased across border crossings and healthcare centers following confirmed outbreaks in neighboring nations. Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni confirmed that Kenya currently has no documented Ebola cases despite multiple samples being collected and analyzed. “As of now, there are no confirmed cases in Kenya. We have collected samples, but all tested in our laboratories have returned negative results,” stated Muthoni. The PS noted that authorities have implemented enhanced screening at all entry points, with millions of travelers already screened as part of initiatives to prevent the disease from entering the country. “Collectively, over 10 million travelers have been screened at our border and entry points, and we will continue screening all incoming individuals to ensure our safety,” she emphasized. Muthoni indicated that visitors from high-risk regions are being encouraged to undergo temporary isolation to enable health authorities to monitor their health status and take necessary actions if required. The government has selected the National Public Health Laboratory, Kemri Nairobi, Kemri Kisumu, and mobile facilities to conduct Ebola testing in the nation, which she described as significant progress from the COVID-19 era when samples were transported to South Africa for examination. “During the COVID period, we sent our samples as far as South Africa. Now, we can perform these tests within our own country,” the PS explained. She mentioned that the ministry has improved laboratory capabilities and diagnostic readiness by maintaining supplies of testing materials and protective gear to assist healthcare workers in the event of an outbreak. According to her, at least 880 national and county-level healthcare professionals have been educated and trained on Ebola detection, treatment, and infection control procedures. Muthoni stated that training will continue, particularly in high-risk counties adjacent to affected nations as the government conducts simulation exercises and emergency response drills. “A total of 880 national and county healthcare workers have been oriented, and we are continuing to train them on identifying warning signs because without this critical knowledge and expertise, it presents a challenge,” she said. County administrations, especially those near border crossings, have been instructed to identify and activate isolation facilities that can accommodate suspected Ebola patients pending further medical treatment. The PS reported that rapid response teams have been deployed across the country, mainly at border points, to monitor developments and evaluate county-level readiness. “Even during the holiday period, our teams are active in the field, and I will also be visiting border areas to assess preparedness levels and verify that we have the necessary resources,” she said. The ministry has also strengthened cross-border partnerships with neighboring countries such as Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with regional and international organizations in efforts to prevent any potential transmission of the disease. Muthoni appealed to the public to maintain composure and refrain from sharing unverified information on social media, noting that anxiety and false information could compromise ongoing preparedness initiatives. “Let us not circulate rumors. Let us remain vigilant for symptoms and if you experience illness, please visit a healthcare facility. Do not attempt self-treatment at home as this could lead to serious consequences,” she warned. She further requested media cooperation in supporting government initiatives through public awareness campaigns and distribution of accurate information about Ebola prevention and response measures. The PS also encouraged hotel operators and hospitality industry participants to maintain elevated standards of sanitation and cleanliness, particularly when managing linens and shared amenities. She reassured Kenyans that the Ministry of Health remains fully alert and committed to providing regular updates on the developing situation. “We will continue providing information, and Kenyans should only trust data originating from the Ministry of Health,” stated Muthoni.
