Gachagua Promises Diaspora Seats in Government if Elected

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has introduced a proposal to formally incorporate Kenyans abroad into Kenya’s governance system should he win the presidency in 2027.

Addressing Kenyans residing in the United Kingdom on Sunday, May 17, Gachagua stated that professionals from the diaspora would be nominated to the National Assembly, Senate, County Assemblies, and even executive positions.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader explained that nominating diaspora representatives to government positions would address what he described as the breakdown of merit-based appointments in governance.

“I have emphasized multiple times that our Senate and National Assembly must include nominees from the diaspora who will represent your interests in these legislative bodies,” Gachagua declared.

Additionally, counties with strong Democratic for the Citizens Party support would prioritize nominating diaspora representatives to county assemblies to create effective legislation and enhance devolution at the local level.

The former deputy president accused President William Ruto of lacking the professionalism, experience, and integrity necessary to lead Kenya.

He pointed to his recent United States visit as evidence of how professionally managed devolved systems can revolutionize local development, suggesting Kenya could achieve similar success by leveraging diaspora expertise from the United Kingdom and other nations.

“Kenya’s challenges stem not from a shortage of capable individuals, but from the current president’s disregard for meritocracy, professionalism, experience, and integrity,” he added.

“He shows no respect for professionalism. He shows no respect for experience. He shows no respect for integrity,” he continued, intensifying his criticism of President William Ruto.

Gachagua positioned the proposal within a wider political and governance reform agenda focused on transforming devolution for rural areas and urban centers that have not fully realized the potential of county governments.

The former deputy president is currently in the United Kingdom, engaging with Kenyan expatriates to build support for his party while preparing for the 2027 presidential race.

While pursuing his political ambitions, Gachagua is also facing an ongoing legal challenge regarding his 2024 impeachment. Should the court rule in his favor, the former Mathira Member of Parliament is expected to contest the presidency as part of the United Opposition coalition, aligning with his recent statements.
