Cucumbers Bring Prosperity: Kiambu Farmers Discover Economic Benefits

by KenyaPolls

Cucumber cultivation has emerged as a profitable enterprise for farmers in Kiambu County, providing quick financial returns because of the strong demand from urban markets, hotels, and supermarkets.
Farmers report that cucumbers are increasingly becoming a valuable cash crop, yielding significant profits from a plant that matures within just 40 to 60 days.
The vegetables are popularly chosen for their high water content, nutritional properties, and health advantages related to hydration and wellness.
Farmers in Kahero village, Kikuyu constituency, claim that in addition to improving food security and generating employment, cucumber cultivation has dramatically transformed their financial situation and elevated their economic standing.
Joyce Nyaruiru, head of the Kahero farmers group, stated in an interview that local farmers are struggling to keep up with the overwhelming demand for cucumbers.
She emphasized that there is consistently high demand for the crop throughout the year due to regular household consumption and a thriving hospitality sector that maintains active markets.
“Cucumbers are definitely becoming our valuable cash crop. The market offers favorable prices of at least sh 100 per kilogram, yet we still cannot satisfy the demand. Embracing this farming method has economically empowered farmers, created employment, and improved our financial prospects,” Nyaruiru stated.
Farmer Samuel Gikonyo mentioned that local farmers have adopted greenhouse farming, which has proven to be the optimal approach for producing premium quality cucumbers.
He highlighted that they are growing English cucumbers, which typically command higher prices in the marketplace.
“While open-field cultivation is economical and suitable for rural and peri-urban regions, we chose greenhouse farming for cucumbers to manage pests and diseases and shield our crops from severe weather conditions. We discovered that pest and disease control was significantly reducing our profits,” Gikonyo explained.
For Samuel Gikonyo, another local farmer, this agricultural venture has completely transformed his perspective on farming.
“Previously, agriculture seemed like an uphill battle. Now I can adequately provide for my family and even hire young people during planting and harvesting periods. The earnings are substantially higher than what we used to make,” he remarked.
Cucumber cultivation in the region has been implemented through collaboration between the Korean Program for International Cooperation in Agriculture Technology (KOPIA) and the Kiambu County Government.
KOPIA, which has established various agricultural initiatives aimed at assisting small-scale farmers nationwide, has been at the forefront of educating farmers on modern agricultural technologies and contemporary farming practices focused on enhancing productivity and boosting household earnings.
Dr. Ji Gang Kim, KOPIA Kenya Director, stated that the program concentrates on providing farmers with hands-on skills that ensure quality production and sustainable agricultural practices.
“Our objective extends beyond teaching farming methods to fostering values like responsibility, innovation, and self-sufficiency. Agriculture should not be regarded as a secondary option but as a legitimate, contemporary profession capable of securing livelihoods and nourishing communities,” he emphasized.
Farmers receive training in proper crop management, irrigation techniques, pest control measures, and post-harvest handling to guarantee they cultivate superior cucumbers that satisfy market requirements.
He observed that agriculture continues to be one of the most effective instruments for enhancing rural livelihoods and increasing food production when farmers receive appropriate knowledge and technological support.
Benson Njogore, Kiambu County Chief Officer for Agriculture, mentioned that the county government will assist farmers with new market connections and extension services to help them optimize their output and achieve substantial returns from their agricultural enterprise.
Simultaneously, he encouraged young people to adopt modern agriculture as an employment alternative, emphasizing that farming offers the pathway to their economic independence and stability.
