Balala Appointed to WTTC Leadership

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has named Hon. Najib Balala, Kenya’s former long-standing Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Minister, to serve as its new Executive Vice President for Advocacy, Government Affairs and Research.

Based at WTTC’s Madrid headquarters, Balala will lead the Council’s global advocacy initiatives, enhance government relations, and manage policy research. His addition represents a significant reinforcement to WTTC’s leadership structure, bringing extensive experience from both government and private sectors in tourism management.

During his more than 12 years as Kenya’s Tourism and Wildlife Minister, Balala was instrumental in developing national and international tourism policies. His leadership demonstrated resilience during various political and economic challenges, while his inclusive approach to private sector collaboration gained broad industry acclaim.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Balala steered Kenya’s tourism industry through strategic changes, positioning the nation as the globally recognized pioneer in receiving the “Safer Tourism Seal” for health and safety standards. He also advanced innovative policy frameworks and destination promotion strategies that reshaped Kenya’s tourism sector, leveraging his diplomatic abilities to align governmental objectives with international private sector goals.

Regarding his new position, Balala conveyed appreciation and enthusiasm: “I am deeply honored and privileged to have been chosen by WTTC for this important role. I am eager to collaborate with Chairman Manfredi Lefebvre and President & CEO Gloria Guevara, applying my experience in connecting public and private sectors to WTTC’s strategic vision and fostering stronger governmental relationships worldwide.”
