Nyamira County launches dairy breed improvement programme

by KenyaPolls

Nyamira County has launched a groundbreaking dairy breed improvement programme aimed at increasing milk production and enhancing the livelihoods of local farmers. Governor Amos Nyaribo spearheaded the initiative, which focuses on heat synchronization and Artificial Insemination (AI) to introduce superior, disease-resistant dairy breeds. Speaking during the launch, Governor Nyaribo highlighted that despite most households owning at least two cows, milk production remains low due to inferior local breeds, with cows averaging just three to five litres per day compared to 20 to 30 litres in other regions.

The programme, supported by county veterinary doctors, seeks to inseminate 3,000 cows for genetic improvement, with over 1,500 already processed. Farmers are receiving training in modern dairy farming practices to maximize yields, while county officials also announced affordable soil testing services to optimize crop production for livestock feed. County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Ms. Peris Oroko, emphasized the county’s favourable weather and potential for professional dairy farming, noting that the initiative will transform small-scale dairy farmers into economically empowered and food-secure households.

Reactions from farmers and agricultural experts have been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing hope that the programme will significantly increase milk yields and household incomes. Dr. Benson Kibore from the Kenya Veterinary Board urged farmers to work only with licensed veterinarians to prevent disease outbreaks and livestock losses. Looking ahead, the county plans to monitor progress, expand AI services, and integrate best practices to sustain growth. The programme is expected to not only improve local dairy production but also serve as a model for modern livestock farming in other Kenyan counties, strengthening food security and rural livelihoods.
