Kisii County Launches Gusii Wrestling Revival Program in Schools

by KenyaPolls

Kisii County revived *Egesagura* (traditional Gusii wrestling) in 60 primary schools on June 12, 2025—training 4,200 pupils in the chest-grip, hip-throw style once used to settle disputes. Elders taught the cultural rules, while sports officers added safety protocols. The pilot culminated in the *Kisii Youth Wrestling Fest*, won by 13-year-old Moraa Nyaboga. This teaches respect, not rage, said County Executive for Culture, Zipporah Nyaboke. The program reduced school fights by 51% (per education report). A documentary, *The Grip of Peace*, aired on KBC. Plans include a national inter-county championship in 2026.
