Why internet penetration is becoming a priority for Kenya

by KenyaPolls

Kenya has made significant strides in expanding internet penetration nationwide, according to new reports from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) and independent digital research bodies. The findings highlight rapid growth in mobile connectivity, broadband access, and fiber‑optic infrastructure, positioning the country as a regional leader in digital transformation.
In January 2025, DataReportal’s Digital 2025: Kenya report revealed that the nation had 68.8 million mobile connections, surpassing its population of 57 million. The report also noted 27.4 million internet users and 15.1 million social media accounts, reflecting a youthful, digitally engaged population with a median age of 20. This surge in connectivity is reshaping communication, commerce, and education across Kenya.
By June 2025, the CA confirmed that 4G coverage had reached 97.3% of the population, while 5G penetration expanded to 30%. At the same time, Kenya’s fiber‑optic network grew to 13,590 km, up from 8,900 km in 2022. The Sh10 billion Fibre Optic Expansion Project (May 2025) was launched to raise coverage from 62% to 90% by the end of the financial year, ensuring that rural and underserved areas benefit from digital access and e‑government services.
Looking ahead, experts believe Kenya’s progress in internet penetration will boost e‑commerce, fintech, e‑government services, and digital learning. With strong mobile adoption, expanding broadband infrastructure, and supportive government policies, Kenya is well‑positioned to attract foreign investment and foster innovation. The report underscores that Kenya’s digital future is becoming more inclusive, resilient, and globally competitive.
