Kenya’s National Lacrosse Team Debuts at Africa Cup, Finishes Fourth

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s men’s lacrosse team, the *Simbas*, made history at the 2025 Africa Lacrosse Cup in Cape Town on June 22, 2025—finishing fourth in their debut continental appearance. Composed of players from Nairobi, Mombasa, and diaspora returnees, the team stunned Morocco 14–11 in the group stage. Goalie Brian Otieno (Stanford graduate) recorded 18 saves in the bronze-medal match against Uganda. The sport—revived in 2022 by expat coach James Mwangi—now has 22 school clubs and a national federation recognized by World Lacrosse. Safaricom sponsored sticks and helmets, while USIU-Africa hosts the national training base. We’re not copying the West—we’re Africanizing lacrosse, said captain Dennis Omondi. Kenya bids to host the 2027 edition.
