Lamu County hosted the first Dhow Navigation Challenge on July 19, 2025—young sailors raced 20km from Shela to Manda Island using only stars, wind, and Swahili chants—no GPS. 24 teams competed; winners: * Bahari Yetu * (Our Ocean), skippered by 18-year-old Salim Ali Jr. Navigation is memory in motion, said elder Rajab Bwana. Funded by Aga Khan Trust, the event revived endangered skills. UNESCO is documenting the oral star charts. The challenge is now annual, with a girls’ category added in 2026.
