Athletics Kenya Bans Victory Tattoos with Unregulated Ink at Camps

by KenyaPolls

Athletics Kenya banned unlicensed victory tattoos at national camps on July 19, 2025—after 7 athletes developed infections from heavy-metal-laced inks used in informal tattooing. AK partnered with *Safe Ink Kenya* to offer free, certified temporary tattoos (plant-based, 3-day wear) celebrating wins. Pride shouldn’t cost health, said Medical Director Dr. Peter Kamau. The move preserved tradition while ensuring safety. Over 200 athletes opted for eco-tattoos at the Kip Keino Classic. World Athletics shared Kenya’s guidelines globally.
