Kenya’s electoral body has announced a consolidated date of November 27, 2025 for multiple forthcoming by-elections, along with a set of clear guidelines for political parties and candidates. The announcement was made by IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon on August 9, calling for swift action to fill several long-vacant seats across the country.
According to the gazette notice, the commission listed 16 ward by-elections in counties such as Samburu, Nandi, Garissa and Kakamega (including Kisa East Ward) and indicated that parliamentary and senate by-polls would follow shortly. The IEBC directed political parties to submit their aspirants’ names by September 17, while public servants wishing to contest must resign within seven days of the notice. Campaigning is expected to run from October 8 to November 24, daily from 7 am to 6 pm.
The move is intended to bring a measure of order to the by-election process after many seats remained unfilled for extended periods. Observers say standardising the date and issuing detailed guidelines enhances transparency and fairness in Kenya’s devolved elections. Looking ahead, the success of this exercise may set the tone for the crucial 2027 general election — and whether the IEBC can deliver credible polls on schedule.
