Kenyan music star Nyamari Ongegu, popularly known as Nyashinski, has signed a major recording deal with Sony Music Africa, marking a new chapter in his career and for East African music. The announcement came in mid-August 2025 alongside the release of his new single, Tai Chi , which is his first project under Sony. The deal also includes plans to re-release his back catalogue on international streaming platforms, bringing his earlier hits to a global audience.
Nyashinski’s journey has been remarkable. He initially gained fame as part of the rap trio Kleptomaniax and later moved to the United States, where he worked various jobs, including as a truck driver. Returning to Kenya in 2016, he made a successful solo comeback, blending rap, R&B, and Afro-pop in his music. Hits like Now You Know , Malaika , and Mungu Pekee have solidified his reputation as one of Kenya’s most versatile and respected artists, earning multiple awards along the way.
The deal with Sony represents more than a business arrangement; it is an opportunity to amplify East African music on a global stage. With Sony’s backing, Nyashinski is poised to expand his reach internationally while introducing his past hits to new audiences. For Kenyan music, his signing signals that global labels are increasingly recognizing the region’s talent and potential, positioning Nyashinski as a cultural ambassador for East Africa’s vibrant music scene.
