On October 5, 2025, Kenya unveiled the newly constructed Wangari Maathai Athletics Stadium in Nyeri—a KSh 4.8 billion, 20,000-capacity facility built to host the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. The stadium, named after the Nobel laureate, features a World Athletics Class 1-certified track, floodlights, and eco-friendly rainwater harvesting. Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba called it a legacy project for grassroots talent. The opening ceremony included a youth athletics gala where 17-year-old sprinter Amina Jillo broke the national U-20 100m record (11.35s). Kenya U-20s went on to finish third in the tournament, securing qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup—a first since 2009.
