New Industrial Park Planned in Nairobi on Sh2.5 Billion Budget
The Kenyan government has announced plans to establish a new industrial park in Nairobi, backed by a Sh2.5 billion budget, in a bid to stimulate manufacturing growth and job creation in the city’s metropolitan region. The project will bring together public-sector officials, private developers and local stakeholders to develop the infrastructure and set up manufacturing and value-addition facilities on the outskirts of Nairobi. This move is part of the broader push by the government to decentralise industrial capacity and reduce the reliance on imports by improving processing capabilities domestically.
According to sources, the selected site will include modern factory shells, logistics hubs and utilities such as power, water and road access, tailored to accommodate light manufacturing and agro-processing firms. The initiative follows similar industrial developments across Kenya, where Special Economic Zones and integrated industrial parks have been deployed to attract investment and boost economic activity. With Kenya’s manufacturing sector aiming to contribute a larger share of GDP, this new park is intended to plug into that strategy and take advantage of Kenya’s central location in East Africa.
Reactions from industry practitioners and regional business groups have been largely positive, with optimism that the park will provide new employment opportunities for Nairobi’s growing urban labour force and help address supply-chain bottlenecks facing Kenyan manufacturers. However, some analysts caution that the success of the project will depend heavily on how swiftly land is secured, infrastructure brought on‐line, and firms recruited into the new facilities. Without prompt action, there is a risk that the budgeted funds will linger without delivering the intended impact.
Looking ahead, the government plans to commence site preparation within the next quarter, invite tenders for infrastructure work, and begin marketing the park to both domestic and foreign firms. If delivered on schedule, the new industrial park could become a key node in Kenya’s industrial development roadmap—accelerating Nairobi’s role as a regional manufacturing hub and supporting the country’s ambition of moving up the value-chain.
