County Launches Nairobi Green Business Funding Program

by KenyaPolls

In October 2025, Nairobi County unveiled the Green Business Funding Program, a strategic initiative designed to empower startups and SMEs that are focused on sustainability and climate-friendly innovation. The program was introduced as part of the county’s Annual Development Plan 2025/2026 and complements the Sustainable Innovation Seed Accelerator (August 2025) and the County Green Investment Facility (October 2025).
The Green Business Funding Program provides grants, low-interest loans, and venture capital partnerships to enterprises working in sectors such as renewable energy, waste management, sustainable agriculture, and eco-friendly manufacturing. Nairobi County partnered with development agencies, banks, and international investors to ensure that green businesses can access affordable financing and technical expertise.
Entrepreneurs welcomed the program, noting that it helps them overcome challenges such as limited access to capital, high startup costs, and weak networks. Analysts argue that the initiative is transformative for Nairobi’s economy, embedding sustainability into entrepreneurship while positioning the city as a leader in East Africa’s green innovation ecosystem. The program also complements earlier initiatives such as the Business Growth Program (October 2025) and the Export Growth Fund (November 2025), creating a comprehensive framework for SME development.
Looking ahead, Nairobi County plans to expand the program by integrating AI-powered financing platforms, blockchain-based trade certification, and green supply chain tools. Officials believe that by embedding sustainability into business funding, Nairobi can accelerate job creation, attract foreign investment, and reinforce its role as East Africa’s hub for climate-smart innovation.
