Kaluma Assures Luo Unity and ODM’s Role in Broad-Based Government
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has dismissed claims of disunity within the Luo community following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. In a statement on X, Kaluma emphasized that the community and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will continue to work with President William Ruto under the existing broad-based government framework. He urged Kenyans to respect the late Odinga’s political will, asserting that the community remains committed to national unity and collaboration with the ruling administration.
Raila Odinga’s death on October 15, 2025, in India has left a leadership void in the Luo community and raised questions about the future direction of ODM, which is marking its 20th anniversary this year. Kaluma highlighted that the late Odinga had fostered a cooperative approach with President Ruto through the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ODM and UDA, a strategy aimed at ensuring equity, inclusivity, and national cohesion. He reiterated that ODM will honor Odinga’s vision of remaining an active partner in the government while maintaining its distinct political identity.
Kaluma’s remarks come in response to criticisms from People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who questioned the nature of the Ruto-ODM alliance. He cautioned against undermining Odinga’s legacy, describing such interventions as premature and disrespectful. We will follow Baba’s political will and direction to the letter, Kaluma stated, noting that positions and titles are temporary, but community allegiance and national responsibility endure.
Looking ahead, Kaluma stressed that ODM and the Luo community’s engagement with the broad-based government will continue beyond the 2027 elections, reinforcing the partnership between the national leadership and regional stakeholders. Analysts say the assurance of unity is intended to stabilize political dynamics in Nyanza and project continuity in the cooperative governance model pioneered by Odinga. By reaffirming commitment to the government, Kaluma seeks to prevent internal fragmentation and maintain the Luo community’s influence in shaping national policies while honoring the late leader’s enduring legacy.
