The 2025 Nairobi City Marathon (October 27, 2025) became the first carbon-neutral marathon in Africa after offsetting 1,250 tonnes of CO₂ via reforestation in the Aberdare Forest and solar-powered timing tech. Organized by Athletics Kenya and the City County, the event banned single-use plastics, used electric lead vehicles, and partnered with *TakaTaka Solutions* for 98% waste recycling. Over 12,000 runners participated, including 4,200 in the inclusive *Wheels & Walkers* 5km. Winners: Tamirat Tola (ETH, 2:04:28) and Hellen Obiri (KEN, 2:17:45). Obiri, in her marathon debut, called it the most beautiful race I’ve ever run. The certification was verified by Climate Neutral Group. UN Environment Programme hailed it as a model for urban sporting events.
