New App Helps Track Immunization Records

Health authorities have introduced a new digital application designed to streamline how vaccination data is recorded and managed, particularly in hard-to-reach areas. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in collaboration with Peru’s Ministry of Health, recently unveiled the Vacuna Offline app. This tool allows health workers to input immunization records at the point of care, even where there is no internet connectivity.
One of the key features of the app is its ability to synchronize stored data with national health systems once a connection is re-established. This ensures that immunization information collected offline does not remain siloed but contributes to the broader health data ecosystem.
According to PAHO, this results in more reliable and timely data, which can greatly aid in public health planning and vaccination outreach strategies.
In the pilot phase — conducted in cross-border communities in Peru including Amazonas, Madre de Dios, and Loreto — the app significantly reduced the workload of health personnel. PAHO’s analysis indicated a 30% decrease in data-entry time, allowing staff to spend more time engaging with patients rather than on paperwork.
The app also boosts data quality and traceability, helping to avoid errors common in paper-based systems.
Health officials believe that the success of the Vacuna Offline app could offer a scalable model for other countries facing similar challenges. The tool was developed under WHO’s SMART Guidelines interoperability standards.
If widely adopted, it could become a powerful digital public asset to improve vaccination coverage and effectiveness in remote or underserved regions.
