A new rehabilitation centre has been inaugurated in Thika West Sub‑County, offering a vital lifeline to individuals battling substance abuse. The state‑of‑the‑art facility, named Stegrami Rehabilitation Centre, was funded by MP Alice Ng’ang’a and welcomed its first patients this week.
Designed as a male‑only facility, the centre provides holistic care for people dealing with drug and alcohol addiction as well as co‑occurring mental health issues. It boasts a multidisciplinary team of licensed counsellors, psychologists, nutritionists, and psychiatrists, who will deliver comprehensive treatment including therapy, medical care, and wellness support.
Officials say the centre’s opening marks a shift in how addiction is addressed locally: instead of punitive measures, there is a renewed focus on rehabilitation. Thika’s Assistant County Commissioner welcomed the centre, noting that it offers hope and dignity for individuals seeking recovery rather than locking them up
A recovering addict, who is now the centre’s peer‑support advocate, said the facility has given him a new lease on life. Through his own recovery journey, he hopes the centre will help others recognize that addiction is a treatable condition—and that healing is possible.
