In a major push to improve access to medical services, several Kenyan counties are rolling out new mobile clinics to reach remote and underserved communities. In Homa Bay, for instance, the Aga Khan Hospital has donated a fully equipped mobile clinic valued at KSh 20 million to provide vital services such as immunisation, maternal care, and disease screening to people living in hard-to-reach areas. Meanwhile, in Turkana North, the county government is in talks with World Relief Kenya to deploy mobile health units to offer integrated primary care — including diagnosis, growth monitoring, nutrition counselling, and referral services
The mobile clinics are designed to overcome long-standing logistical and infrastructural barriers that limit access to healthcare in rural Kenya. In Homa Bay, the vehicle is solar-powered and has modern diagnostic equipment, two examination couches, a fridge and cooler boxes — allowing it to deliver on-the-spot testing, maternal services, and even breast and cervical cancer screening.Turkana’s mobile outreach initiative, on the other hand, would bring critical preventative and curative services to nomadic and remote communities that struggle to access fixed facilities due to the vast distances involved.
Local leaders and health advocates have welcomed the move, describing the clinics as game changers in bridging Kenya’s health equity gap. West Pokot County has also revived its Beyond Zero mobile clinic programme to deliver maternal and child health services, including antenatal care, immunisation, and ultrasound checkups, to women in remote parts of the semi-arid region. Officials say these mobile units are not only improving health outcomes but also reducing the time and cost of travel for vulnerable populations. Looking ahead, county governments are calling for more partnerships — with NGOs, private hospitals, and international donors — to scale up mobile outreach so that no Kenyan village is left without basic, quality healthcare.
