Kenyan innovators lead Africa in smart farming

Kenya is emerging as a continental leader in smart farming, driven by innovative startups, research institutions, and entrepreneurs applying technology to address agricultural challenges. Using artificial intelligence (AI), precision irrigation, drone monitoring, and data analytics, Kenyan innovators are developing solutions that optimize crop yields, improve resource management, and reduce post-harvest losses. Government initiatives have played a crucial role in supporting these innovations. The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, launched on 27 March 2025, provides a roadmap for AI adoption and ethical governance in agriculture and other sectors. Complementing this is the Kenya AI Skilling Alliance (KAISA), launched on 29 October 2025, which equips innovators and startups with mentorship, training, and resources to develop scalable solutions. Pilot projects spearheaded by Kenyan innovators include AI-assisted crop disease detection, predictive market analytics, and automated irrigation systems—showing tangible benefits for farmers across both rural and urban areas.
