KRCS Provides Relief Food to Vulnerable Families in Samburu

Residents of Loosuk trading centre in Samburu County received much-needed food assistance as the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) distributed relief supplies to help families affected by persistent hunger. Women and elderly men were the primary beneficiaries of the initiative, which saw three cows slaughtered and shared among the most vulnerable households. The donation comes at a time when communities in Samburu continue to grapple with food shortages worsened by prolonged drought and reduced livestock productivity.

According to officials coordinating the outreach, the programme targeted groups considered at highest risk, including widows, elderly residents, and households facing acute food insecurity. Loosuk, like many parts of Samburu, has endured recurrent dry spells that have strained access to food and water, leaving pastoralist families in dire need of support. The KRCS team said the gesture was part of ongoing efforts to cushion affected communities while working closely with local leaders to ensure fair distribution.

The relief exercise was well received by residents, many of whom expressed gratitude, saying the donated beef would sustain their families during a particularly difficult period. Community elders noted that the intervention helped ease immediate hunger levels and reduce the pressure on families whose livestock numbers have drastically fallen. Local administrators also welcomed the move, adding that more partnerships with humanitarian organisations are needed to reach remote villages facing similar challenges.

KRCS officials indicated that additional interventions may be rolled out depending on the severity of drought conditions across the region. They emphasised the importance of long-term resilience programmes, including water access projects and livelihood support, to reduce dependence on emergency food aid in the future. As Samburu awaits the next rainy season, humanitarian agencies and county authorities are expected to intensify monitoring and scale up response efforts to prevent further deterioration of food security.
