Kenya’s Para-Sport Innovation Lab Launches First Locally Made Prosthetic Blade

by KenyaPolls

The East Africa Para-Sport Innovation Lab (News #302) launched *Mwangaza Blade MkII* on November 29, 2025—the first prosthetic running blade fully designed, 3D-printed, and tested in Kenya. Cost: KSh 6,500 (vs. KSh 300,000+ imports). Made from recycled ocean plastic and carbon fiber, it’s adjustable for weight, stiffness, and terrain. Dignity shouldn’t cost a house, said Mary Njoki, who raced on the prototype at the National Para Games. 120 blades have been distributed; 87% user satisfaction. Safaricom pledged KSh 50 million for mass production. The Lab is now patenting the design across Africa.
