Nduva Claims First Sunshine Development Tour Title at Royal Nairobi

Nyali Golf & Country Club professional Daniel Nduva staged an impressive back-nine surge to capture the NCBA Royal Classic title, the second installment of the 2026 Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing, at Royal Nairobi Golf Club.
Nduva, who began the final round in second place, recorded a level-par 72 to complete the tournament at 3-under-par 213, securing his first Sunshine Development Tour victory and the KES 400,000 winner’s share from the event’s KES 2 million prize fund.
The triumph seemed improbable midway through the final round following a challenging front nine. Nduva lost shots on the opening and eighth holes and incurred a damaging double-bogey on the seventh, leaving him trailing significantly.
Nevertheless, the coastal golfer mounted a remarkable charge on the back nine, sinking birdies on the eleventh, twelfth, fourteenth, fifteenth and seventeenth holes to ascend the leaderboard and secure a memorable victory.
“It feels fantastic to achieve this win. The front nine was difficult and I encountered some unfortunate breaks, but I remained patient and maintained faith in my abilities,” stated Nduva.
“On the back nine, I found every fairway and every green, which provided me with the confidence to attack the pins and generate birdie chances.”
He credited his success primarily to his tee-to-green performance.
“My driving was likely the strongest aspect of my game today. When you’re hitting the driver effectively, it builds confidence throughout the rest of your game. I managed to convert five birdies on the back nine and that ultimately proved decisive.”
The victory held special significance following an injury-plagued season the previous year.
“Last year I faced injury challenges, so to return and win again means a great deal to me. This triumph serves as a reminder that golf requires patience, perseverance through tough times and self-belief even when circumstances aren’t favorable,” he added.
Besides the KES 400,000 prize money, Nduva also accumulated valuable Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit points.
The race for the title remained intensely competitive throughout the final round, with six players ultimately sharing second place at 1-under-par 215.
The contingent featured Kenya’s John Lejirma, David Wakhu, Greg Snow and amateur Adel Balala, Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera, and Nigeria’s Sunday Olapade, who started the day as the overnight leader. Each participant received KES 114,833 from the prize fund.
Snow expressed contentment with his week’s performance despite narrowly missing the title.
“I’m satisfied with how I competed throughout the week. Royal Nairobi is always a challenging course and you must remain patient as opportunities can emerge at any moment. I created chances for myself, but a few shots here and there made the difference. Finishing tied for second is still a positive outcome and provides me with confidence heading into future events.”
Lejirma, continuing his promising transition to the professional level, remained optimistic.
“It was a solid week overall. There are certainly positive elements I can take from my performance, although I would have preferred to get over the line. The competition was very high-quality and it came down to minor margins. As a new professional, every tournament presents an opportunity to learn, improve and continue building momentum for the season.”
Balala, the top amateur in contention, welcomed the experience of competing alongside established professionals.
“It’s encouraging to be in contention against such a strong professional field. I learned a great deal over the three days, particularly about managing pressure when near the top of the leaderboard. I’ll take the lessons from this week and continue diligently working on my game.”
For Olapade, the final round did not proceed as planned after beginning the day leading the tournament.
“It was a challenging final round and unfortunately I couldn’t sustain the momentum from the previous day, but that’s golf. The competition was outstanding and I enjoyed the challenge. I’ll take the positives from the week and continue working hard as the season progresses.”
The NCBA Royal Classic drew a strong field of 96 local and international professionals and amateurs from across Africa and beyond, all competing for OWGR, World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit points.
The event marked the second stop of the 2026/27 Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing season, following the opening leg at Thika Sports Club, won by Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera.
Focus now shifts to the next tour leg at VetLab Sports Club from June 14-16, where players will pursue Sunshine Tour progression opportunities and critical Order of Merit points in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive season.
