President William Ruto brought humor to State House in Nairobi when he playfully criticized a Gor Mahia official for presenting a jersey larger than what he had requested.
After receiving the Kenyan Premier League trophy from Gor Mahia, Ruto shared how he had specifically asked for a club jersey only to discover that the one delivered was in extra-large size.
“Lakini kuna jamaa mmoja ameniangusha. Nilikuwa nimemwambia aniletee jersey ya Gor Mahia akaniletea XXL. Sasa ilikuwa inakaa kama gunia nikasema hapana (There is one guy who has failed me. I had requested him to bring me a Gor Mahia jersey, and he brought XXL. It was looking like a sack, so I said no),” the President joked, causing laughter among those present.
The President mentioned that the oversized jersey did not meet his expectations and directed the club representative to find a smaller size.
“So boss utatafuta ingine, tafuta large, umeleta extra large, nitumie mbili ama tatu, different colours (You will have to look for another one for me. Look for large, you brought extra large, different colours),” he stated.
The humorous interaction brought amusement to the otherwise celebratory event as Gor Mahia players, coaches, and club officials handed over the league trophy to the nation’s leader at State House.
The Head of State congratulated the club on their successful season, commending the players and technical staff for their dedication and effort in winning the championship.
The exchange became one of the highlights of the gathering, with attendees chuckling at the President’s frank comments about the poorly fitting jersey.
Gor Mahia, Kenya’s most accomplished football club, presented the trophy as part of festivities following another triumphant Premier League season.
Ruto additionally encouraged sponsors to enhance investments in local sports teams, noting that Kenya’s abundant sporting talent needs more support to flourish and compete at international standards.
The President stated that the nation’s accomplishments in football, athletics, cricket, and various other fields are a matter of national pride.
“I want to urge sponsors to support other teams because the talent of our young people is something that we are very proud of as a nation, whether it is athletics, football, cricket and all other sports, it is something that we celebrate as a nation. And that is why when I saw you lift the cup again, I said I must meet you.”
