Kenya Railways is preparing to restore service along the 77.8km Gilgil-Nyahururu Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) branch line as part of nationwide initiatives to revitalize the railway system and improve regional connections.
This historic rail route, often called the “Thompson Railway” because of its link to Thompson Falls in Nyahururu, is scheduled to restart passenger and freight services on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after rehabilitation efforts by the railway authority.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano will officially inaugurate the rail line from Gilgil station on Tuesday, welcoming members of the public for the inaugural journey to Nyahururu station, marking the return after 42 years.
Passenger service will feature four weekly trips: trains from Nairobi to Nyahururu on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 AM, with return services from Nyahururu to Nairobi on Wednesdays and Sundays at 10 AM. Passengers can choose economy, second class, or first class seating.
The railway authority has completed track rehabilitation and maintenance, cleared vegetation from the corridor, and improved operational infrastructure along the route. Passenger stations at Gilgil, Ol Kalou, and Nyahururu have also been modernized.
Construction of the Gilgil–Nyahururu branch line occurred in the 1920s, with beginning operations in 1929.
The railway played a crucial role in developing the Aberdare Highlands and Rift Valley regions by enabling transportation of agricultural goods, livestock, timber, and passengers.
The line connected vital agricultural centers such as Gilgil, Ol Kalou, and Nyahururu, allowing farmers and merchants to access both local and export markets effectively.
Infrastructure deterioration and reduced freight volumes eventually led to service suspension. The current initiative represents Kenya Railways’ broader strategy to modernize and restore railway operations nationwide.
The revival of services on the Gilgil–Nyahururu route is anticipated to create new economic opportunities in the region through enhanced market access, affordable transportation options, and support for trade and tourism.
