Kenyan Tennis Federation established a historic partnership with the French Tennis Federation during the ongoing French Open tournament at Roland Garros on Saturday. The Memorandum of Understanding, formalized by Tennis Kenya President Wanjiru Mbugua-Karani and FFT President Gilles Moretton, aims to revolutionize tennis development in Kenya through technical knowledge sharing, infrastructure improvements, and enhanced global visibility. The signing ceremony took place at the renowned venue and was attended by Kenya’s Ambassador to France Betty Cherwon, Evans Achoki representing the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, along with senior FFT members such as Deputy President Lionel Ollinger and Nathalie Dechy. Other attendees included Francis Mutuku, Lynette Lokuruka, Daniel Chirchir, Jack Munywoki, Stéphane Renaud-Bezot, and Lucas Durand. The agreement encompasses multiple programs: a Junior High-Performance Pathway for athletes under 18, a Junior Development Pathway for those under 14, mutual junior competition exchanges, clay-court facility development, coaching education, officiating advancement, club governance enhancement, and leadership capacity building. “This partnership is designed as a lasting relationship between French and Kenyan tennis, creating beneficial outcomes for both organizations and their broader tennis communities,” stated Moretton. Mbugua-Karani described the agreement as a significant achievement. “I felt extremely honored today. This MoU with the FFT represents a major advancement for Tennis Kenya and demonstrates the potential of persistent relationship building,” she commented, noting the goal is to create avenues for players, coaches, officials, and clubs to develop and compete internationally. Immediate benefits of the collaboration include increased international recognition for Kenyan tennis professionals, transfer of clay-court expertise suitable for local facilities, and enhanced junior development frameworks. Kenyan officials will gain experience through referee internships at Roland Garros and other French competitions, while club administrators will learn from the French club system, considered one of the world’s most effective development approaches. The agreement also ensures reciprocal exchange initiatives in administration and governance, with FFT managing arrangements in France and Tennis Kenya coordinating international travel. Young Kenyan tennis players will join ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors events in France via a partnership with Club Istres, while French juniors will participate in Kenyan ITF competitions later in the year. Furthermore, Kenyan players under 14 will participate in an international summer training and competition tour in July, with coaching workshops and academy visits scheduled during ITF junior events in Kenya from October to November. The partnership builds on Mbugua-Karani’s recent visit to Istres, where she met Mayor Robin Pretot to initiate an exchange between Istres Sport Tennis Club and Tennis Kenya. The Kenyan delegation later witnessed the exciting Roland Garros match where Brazil’s Joao Fonseca defeated Novak Djokovic, highlighting the global platform where Kenyan tennis aspires to establish its presence. This groundbreaking alliance solidifies Kenya’s position in the international tennis landscape, promising stronger technical capabilities, more robust institutional cooperation, and expanded opportunities for young Kenyan players to excel globally.
