Ruto Jokingly Tells Museveni: Backing Both Arsenal and Harambee Stars

by KenyaPolls

President William Ruto responded playfully to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s comments about African preference for European football teams instead of local ones, declaring his support for both Arsenal and Kenya’s national team, Harambee Stars.

Ruto mentioned learning that Museveni was “somewhat displeased” with the celebrations after Arsenal’s English Premier League victory, and had wondered why African leaders prioritized foreign teams over local ones.

Addressing attendees at the National Prayer Breakfast in Nairobi, the President noted that Museveni had apparently been shocked to discover his affinity for Arsenal, questioning why he didn’t back Harambee Stars instead.

“I understand President Museveni was somewhat unhappy with our reactions here. But please convey to him that I support both teams. I’ve been told they compete at different times and achieve victories in various ways. So kindly explain to the elder about this Arsenal situation. It was purely excitement,” stated the President.

Ruto humorously mentioned a message he received implying that he might impose taxes on Arsenal fans because of their extensive celebrations.

“I came across an image showing me in thought, and what was on my mind was, ‘Is there a possibility of taxing these Arsenal fans?’ But I want to assure that well-meaning person that I’m also an Arsenal fan, so we won’t be pursuing that approach,” he explained.

These comments followed Museveni’s public rejection of suggestions that he should commemorate Arsenal’s win, asserting that African leaders should focus on development priorities including employment and poverty elimination.

“I asked, ‘What is Arsenal?’ It’s a European football club… and I should attend celebrations? For what reason?” Museveni stated in previous comments.

He additionally mentioned that although he had previously played football, he had given up the sport many years ago to concentrate on national responsibilities.

Museveni also questioned why Africans should be deeply engaged with foreign football culture when numerous communities still confront economic difficulties.

Arsenal supporters throughout East Africa had previously celebrated the club’s Premier League championship, generating extensive public enthusiasm, including gatherings in Nairobi’s central business area, Umoja, Roysambu and Kasarani.

In Kenya, President Ruto along with numerous leaders from various sectors congratulated Arsenal FC and commended the team’s perseverance and consistency.

“Our aspirations might be delayed, but never abandoned. Congratulations to Arsenal, and thank you for demonstrating resilience and consistency. Let’s achieve success again soon,” Ruto stated.

Fans wearing the team’s red and white attire sang, danced and waved flags throughout the night, while others mounted vehicles and motorcycles, sounding vuvuzelas as drivers honked in solidarity.
