Madagascar issued an early warning to Kenya and neighboring countries on Tuesday by being the first delegation to arrive in Nairobi for the upcoming UFAK Region East Karate Championships. The event is scheduled from May 28 to 31, 2026, at the Nyayo National Stadium Indoor Arena.
The determined Malagasy team touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday afternoon with high hopes of dominating the regional tournament.
Led by Madagascar Karate Federation President Dr. Emile Ratefimanamary, the contingent immediately announced plans to pursue gold medals in various categories, promising one of the championship’s most competitive editions.
Madagascar has established a strong presence in African karate over the years, remaining one of the continent’s traditional powers in the sport.
Their arrival has already generated excitement and anticipation as Nairobi prepares to host athletes, coaches, referees, and officials from across East Africa.
Shortly after landing in Kenya, Dr. Ratefimanamary commended the hosts for organizing the prestigious regional competition while expressing confidence in his team’s preparedness.
“We are pleased to be in Nairobi, Kenya for this exceptional competition. Hosting such championships is never easy, and Kenya deserves recognition for organizing it. We possess a highly competitive team ready to excel and fight for top honors in every category,” stated Dr. Ratefimanamary.
Head coach Ricko Rakotonanana shared similar views, revealing that the team had undergone extensive preparations and would not be intimidated by the hosts or other regional rivals.
“We have prepared thoroughly and have selected our best athletes. We understand other countries, including the hosts, aim to win, but we will give our absolute best,” said Rakotonanana.
The arrival of Team Madagascar marks the beginning of what organizers anticipate will be a vibrant week of elite karate action in Nairobi. Eleven additional countries are expected to arrive on Wednesday as the Kenyan capital prepares to welcome some of the region’s finest karate talent.
The championship will commence with technical training sessions and seminars for referees and coaches before the main competition takes place during the weekend at the renowned Nyayo Stadium Indoor Arena.
Kenya is anticipated to present a strong squad supported by home crowd as it seeks to protect national pride against experienced rivals such as Madagascar, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia.
Spectators can expect intense matches, strategic excellence, and disciplined performances characteristic of high-level karate, with rivalries already intensifying prior to the opening ceremony.
