The Interior Permanent Secretary, Raymond Omollo, has announced that Wajir Stadium is now 84 percent complete, preparing it for the June 1 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir County.

The PS shared the updates in a social media post, emphasizing that Wajir has lacked a proper stadium since independence, instead using alternative spaces for public gatherings and community sporting activities.

“Throughout our nation’s history, Wajir has never had a dedicated stadium, depending instead on open, undeveloped areas like Wajir Baraza Park for community events and public assemblies,” explained the PS.

He added, “After sixty-two years, under the leadership of President William Samoei Ruto, the area is experiencing significant transformation, evidenced by the rapid advancement of the Wajir Stadium, which stands at 84 percent completion.”

The PS noted that construction is being accelerated to meet the June 1 celebrations, with the project serving as both a national venue and a lasting sports development resource for the region.

The Ministry of Defense, through the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), oversees the facility, with a multi-agency team ensuring the project’s timely completion.

The 10,000-capacity stadium features a full-sized football pitch with artificial turf, an eight-lane running track, modern changing facilities, VIP areas, and enhanced amenities for athletes and spectators throughout the region.

Current work focuses on seat installation, construction of spectator terraces, parking areas, and a borehole to ensure consistent water supply for daily stadium operations and maintenance needs.

According to the PS, the project will bring substantial advantages to Wajir and the broader North Eastern region by nurturing local talent, boosting small businesses, and strengthening social connections through sports.

“This investment will generate considerable benefits for Wajir and the wider North Eastern Region, creating opportunities for local talent to flourish, stimulating small enterprise growth, and building social unity through sports and community gatherings,” stated the PS.

President William Ruto decided to host the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir on February 12, aiming to advance regional development and ensure national inclusion across all parts of Kenya, acknowledging that the area had been neglected and labeled ‘marginalized’ for decades.

The President also took the opportunity to initiate key infrastructure projects in Wajir, such as establishing the Wajir Air Base, to strengthen national security coordination and improve operational readiness throughout the country and beyond.
