Boda Boda Riders Struggle in Nyamira’s Economic Crisis

Boda boda riders in Nyamira face daily struggles as the tough economy affects their livelihoods.

Abigael Kibanga reports that Nyamira Town boda boda operator Edward Onchana works tirelessly each day to improve his family’s situation amidst persistent economic challenges.
According to Onchana, boda boda riding serves as his sole income source, yet he daily contends with purchasing fuel, making payments to the motorcycle owner, and providing for his family.
“I begin my workday at dawn and often continue until late evening, but my earnings remain insufficient,” he reveals.
Edward never intended to work as a boda boda rider. Following secondary education, he attended college with aspirations of finding formal employment. Unfortunately, his expectations did not materialize.
Initially, he considered starting his own business, but insufficient funds proved to be a significant barrier.
A subsequently provided him with a motorcycle through a hire-purchase agreement, which he accepted as a temporary solution. Six years later, he continues to navigate the streets in pursuit of survival.
Despite ongoing difficulties, Edward maintains optimism about future improvements.
He notes that escalating fuel costs diminish his profits, while police enforcement, adverse weather conditions, and mechanical issues further decrease his earnings.
“Occasionally, I return home with fewer than five hundred shillings,” he acknowledges.
The meager income causes concern as his spouse and children rely on him for sustenance, housing, and educational expenses. Sometimes, he mentions, his children go to bed hungry, making him feel inadequate as a parent.
Edward now aspires to own his own motorcycle, believing it would significantly enhance his circumstances.
“Owning my own motorcycle would transform my life for the better, allowing me to fulfill my responsibilities,” he states with optimism.
