People’s Liberation Party (PLP) presidential hopeful Martha Karua has endorsed the nationwide matatu strike, labeling the current economic conditions as a ‘total catastrophe’.
Through a statement issued on Monday, the ex-Justice Minister condemned the Kenya Kwanza government for failing to protect citizens from the deteriorating economic crisis.
Karua asserted that the increased fuel costs have made transportation unaffordable for numerous households and are directly causing the escalating prices of food and basic necessities.
‘Transport workers and commuters aren’t striking to disturb tranquility; they’re protesting because they can no longer endure this government’s oppressive fuel taxes,’ Karua emphasized. She additionally criticized the administration for favoring ‘extravagant lifestyles’ and heavy taxation instead of ordinary citizens’ wellbeing.
The opposition figure targeted Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, challenging the government’s appeal for patience while President William Ruto is abroad. She pointed out that although people are told to wait for assistance, their taxes are being collected promptly.
Karua’s comments arrive as transportation services continue to be halted following the significant rise in pump prices revealed by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on May 14. The strike has interfered with commercial activities and everyday life throughout the nation, affecting both large cities and rural communities.
Wrapping up her statement, Karua advocated for ‘peaceful mass demonstrations’ and encouraged Kenyans to join together in demanding fiscal responsibility and transparency. She stressed that leadership must serve the public rather than benefit those in authority, appealing to citizens to choose representatives dedicated to restoring honor to governance.
